Although this winter's freeze took a toll on the beautiful gardens, the property is enchanting inside and out. Between the upstairs deck, pool, and dock, there's a spot for every mood and time of the day. The owner (Herb) is personable, making himself available to guests, while respecting their privacy -- quite a balancing act. Canal Street is about four blocks away, an easy walk, and Flagler Avenue shops and beach are 1.5 miles away, a manageable walk or bike ride for most. A special and very welcome plus for me is the owner leaves enough time between rentals that the guest is not overwhelmed by a list of things to do before checking out. Potential guests should be aware that the cottage layout, although perfect for a couple or single traveler, would be tight for four despite the foldout couch for more than a day or two. The layout also requires frequent movement between floors via a relatively narrow stairway. The outdoor stairs are more manageable. All rooms are lovingly decorated with art and crafts, so be sure your pets are quiet natured. I heartily recommend 9 Oaks to any travelers seeking a quiet oasis close to both the Canal District and beach. It's a clear 5-star accommodation!
