Holidays To Oman

The friendliness is always genuine in the Middle Eastern country of Oman, which hangs out on the eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula.

Over the past few decades, Oman has modernised at a fantastic pace, but heritage and tradition still reign supreme in this Muslim-dominated society. You’ll also find that your money goes a long way, making Oman holiday packages a fantastic deal.

Oman is a country filled with natural wonders, including the rugged Hajar Mountains in Northern Oman and the massive Wahiba Sands. On your Oman holiday, however, you may discover that the country’s greatest treasure is its welcoming people, many of whom speak excellent English.

Things to Do in Oman

Oman holidays typically start by landing at Muscat International Airport (MCT), which will place you at the doorstep of the country’s exciting capital city. Muscat has many historic treasures within its city borders, as well as great restaurants and luxurious hotels. Don’t be stingy with the sunscreen and keep a bottle of water handy—Oman summers pack some major sizzle.

More than anything, Oman loves its forts. You’ll see these impressive and ancient relics wherever you go. In fact, before you leave Muscat, check out the Jalali and Mirani forts, which solemnly guard Muscat Bay. These guys date back all the way to the 16th century, and they aren’t even close to the oldest forts in the country. The famous Bahla Fort at the base of the Djebel Akhdar highlands was built in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Dolling out for a set of wheels is a smart idea so you can drive between cities and stretch your holiday reach. Wotif can help you out with that—just book one of our Oman car hire deals and be on your way!

Sand might not seem like such an exciting thing to look at, but you’ll be impressed by exactly how much sand Oman contains, especially when you gaze out at the seemingly endless sand dunes of the Wahiba Sands. It’ll make you thirsty just looking at it!

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

One of the most popular souvenirs in Oman is a Khanjar, the silver sheathed dagger that is the country’s national symbol. You’ll find Khanjars for sale in almost every shop, but take care before buying, as the quality can vary. Oman is also famous for its silver. Need to make amends with anyone? Pick out some beautiful silver jewellery and mend that bridge!

Hungry? So are we. Omanis are big into fresh seafood, so don’t be surprised if some shark ends up on your plate! When it’s time for dessert, slurp up the gooey sweet treat called halwa and save some room for famous Omani dates.

Oman’s conservative culture means their version of a nightlife may be different than your own. Foreigners are allowed to purchase alcohol, but you’ll pay a premium for the privilege. Omanis prefer to linger long over meals and let friendship be the social lubricant for a night of stories and fun. If you want a more happening nightlight, head to Oman’s neighbour, the United Arab Emirates where Dubai holidays promise lots of nightlife action.
