Omarama is practically right in the middle of the Southern Lakes District, within easy reach of six of its beautiful lakes: Lake Benmore, Lake Ohau, Lake Pukaki, Lake Tekapo, Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. Avid fishermen will love the salmon, brown trout and rainbow trout in the lakes, as well as the Omarama Stream and Ahuriri River. You may even spot some penguins in the area if you're lucky. Queenstown Airport is 164km away and you'll want to hire a car while you're at the airport so that you can get around this sleepy town, as well as the surrounding region. Timaru, famous for being built upon volcanic bluestone, is about 160km away; Oamaru, about 120km away, is well-known for its Little Blue Penguins and white stone Victorian architecture; Mount Cook is about 85km away and, if you're here in winter, the Ohau Snowfields are only 45 minutes away.
