About this property

Van Wormer Room 201, Hyland Hotel

This newly renovated and locally owned property was the first hotel/BnB ever built in Palmer Alaska. It opened for business in 1936 with single rooms renting for $3 a day. We have maintained the historic colonial feel of the building while incorporating modern amenities to ensure our guests a comfortable and safe stay. The Hyland Hotel was officially listed on the federal National Register of Historic Places on June 21, 1991. We look forward to sharing a piece of Palmer's history with you!

The Van Wormer family holds a notable place in the history of Palmer, Alaska, particularly through the birth of Evelyn J. Van Wormer in 1938.

This period coincides with the Matanuska Colony Project, a 1930s New Deal initiative that relocated families from the northern United States to Alaska to establish agricultural communities.

While specific details about the Van Wormer family's involvement in this project are limited, their presence in Palmer during this era suggests they were among the pioneering settlers contributing to the region's development. The Van Wormer surname itself is of Dutch origin, indicating possible ancestral roots from the Netherlands.
