The grounds and bungalows are beautiful. The grounds are lush and well designed, with pools and bars scattered throughout the property. The resort is an oasis in a row of hotels that are generally ugly, and our beach-front bungalow was spacious. Beware about booking a bungalow that says that you can get either a king or two queens. We had our 16-year old, 6.3" tall, son with us, and I emailed the resort immediately upon booking (almost a year in advance) that we would like a bungalow with two queens. They responded that they can't guarantee it, and we ended up with a king. There was a small twin in the room that was too short for him. That was very disappointing, especially as this was a very expensive vacation. They told us that they only guarantee the type of room if we book directly through their website.
The staff was excellent, attentive, professional, and personal. Unfortunately, some equipment was out of order in the gym and wasn't fixed. The gym itself was very small. You can easily walk to restaurants and shops, even if most of them are just tourist shops.
The food wasn't excellent but good. The desserts and the pastries/breads at the buffet were the best. Beware that you still need to tip at every meal, even if the food and drinks are included.
I would definitely recommend staying at Mahekal Beach Resort!
