Check into your Sacramento accommodation and hit the town. Take a tour of the State Capitol and explore California history at its associated museum. Just a short walk away, admire the offerings of the Crocker Art Museum, which is the oldest of its kind in the West and features a collection of Californian art. If you're due for some exercise, rent a bike and pedal along the American River Bicycle Trail for views of Sacramento and the river. Later, work your way over to Old Sacramento, a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. Here, check out restored train cars and explore the history of the "iron horse" at the California State Railroad Museum. This district may be known as Old Sac, but it's no sad sack! Thriving with shopping, dining, museums and period architecture, this is one of the city's most happening hot spots, so take your time looking around.

Getting to & Around Sacramento

Touch down at Sacramento International Airport (SMF). From here it's just 18 km to the city centre. Rent a car, take a cab, or ride route 42A on the aptly named Yolobus. Once you're in town, many attractions are within walking distance if you don't want to bother with a rental car. The city also features well-marked bike lanes, so cycling is a great option if you're travelling farther.
