Stylish living in the village square with a large terrace overlooking the Morvan

The house was built in 1928 and lies at the edge of the peaceful village square of the small South Burgundy village of Saint-Didier-sur-Arroux, which is located in the Regional Morvan Nature Reserve. The house offers a magnificent view of the undulating pastures in which the white Charolais cattle roam, of the Etang de Bousson and of the southern flanks of the wooded Morvan Mountains.

The annex to the house was in use as a smithy until the sixties of the last century. The village square was then in use to shoe the horses of the farmers and nobilty and to repair farming equipment.

The village has about 250 inhabitants, most of them live on farms in the surrounding area. In the village itself, you will find, aside from our restaurant La Petite Auberge (www.la-petite-auberge.eu) several houses, a post office, the town hall, the school, the church and a flea/antiques market operated by a Dutch couple.

Wonderful place in the countryside

Very well appointed former forge with beautiful interiors in the middle of a picture-perfect historical village and fantastic views into the surrounding countryside. The area is calm but interesting with great walks and excellent dining options. The nearest city Autun is mere 20 mins away and has a substantial cathedral, museums, lovely ancient streets and even a number of impressive Roman-era buildings. The landlady Ana was very friendly, flexible and open-minded and shared a lot of helpful information on the area. We were happy to meet her and will most certainly book this accommodation again.

A gem in a beautiful village

We drove across France for a stay in the Morvan region and arrived tired at the Old Forge having picked up some groceries in Etang sur Arroux on the way. The house and location did not disappoint. Comfortable and well equipped, with the most stunning view of the nearby Lake and surrounding countryside, it was immediately relaxing and we felt very at home. There is plenty to see and do in the area, more than we could possibly fit in to the seven days we were there. I was worried our 11 year old would find it a bit too quiet but he really enjoyed the places we visited, particularly Bibracte, the site of an important Gaullish/Roman settlement which was about 40 mins drive away. He also enjoyed swimming in Lac des Settons and discovering about Romans in Autun! Closer to home, there were lovely walks to be had straight from the door and if course delicious food (and wine). My other half who is a "foodie" had a marvellous time sourcing ingredients to cook at home either in the kitchen or on the splendid bbq. In fact, despite the availability of some reputedly good restsurants nearby, we didn't eat out during our stay. Everyone was very friendly. Anna in particular was a superb hostess, keen to make sure we had a good time and enjoyed ourselves. She succeeded! We had a great time and were a little sad to leave our house on the hill.

Total chill out in a beautiful location

A sleepy location with stunning views - the perfect place to wind down from the presssures of work. The owner Ana was very helpful and was very quick to respond to any queries we had. We happened to arrive as a heatwave hit France so our first week was unbelievably hot! Although there are no shops in the village it is only a ten minute drive to the nearest town Etang sur Arroux where there is a small but perfectly adequate supermarket a pharmacy and a couple of excellent boulangeries. The only reason we would not stay again is because France is so huge we like to try somewhere different each time we visit this beautiful country. Many thanks again to Ana for her help and kindness during our stay. If you have a stressful job and need to unwind or just like the quiet life this property is for you!

Vi havde en fantastisk ferie i Saint Didier. Huset var lige, hvad vi havde Þnsket os. Det er indrettet i typisk fransk landstil med en smuk smuk udsigt til det omkring liggende landskab. Vi vandrede, var pÄ vintur og slappede af i den hyggelige landsby. Vores vÊrt Ana-Cristina var utrolig hjÊlpsom i forhold til vores planlÊgning af vores ture - og sÄ har hun den mest lÊkre restaurant i landsbyen, som vi besÞgte flere gange under vores ophold.

A hidden gem

The smithy is perfect, Ana has created the ideal home from home in the tranquility of Burgundy. From the thoughtful touches (stair gate for the baby, fresh flowers and beautiful linens), to the delicious food in her neighbouring Auberge, we were able to enjoy every minute of our stay. The pictures don’t do justice to the decor and size of the house. There is plenty of space and the terrace is perfect for dinner in the evening in front of the stunning view. Don’t hesitate to book!!

French country living in style

We stayed at the Old Forge for three nights and were very satisfied there. The building is old and rustic with the most wonderful views across the Morvan Regional National Park. The birds sing from dawn to dusk and the Charolais herds move about, munching on the lush grass. The cottage is well appointed and styled beautifully in the owner, Anna's, style. Think old French linen, soft lighting, thick rugs to add colour and warmth on colder nights, mirrors, shutters, chandeliers, fresh flowers, oil paintings. Home from home with a twist ..... the cooking facilities are perfectly adequate but just up the road a few yards is Anna's restauarant, La Petite Auberge.Go there and you will be treated to the most exquisite meal prepared from scratch with all things fresh. The cottage sits in the small village square amongst elegant stone houses, small cottages; the village church is further up but well within sight and you'll hear (and get used to very quickly) the bell as it tolls on the hour and half hour. Inside the house itself is the apple-green kitchen with table and chairs, a fridge/freezer, the shower room and separate wc are on the ground floor along with the comfortable lounge. There's no TV, thankfully, just a large squashy sofa and armchair, a log burner for cool nights and soft lighting. Also downstairs is a room with a washing machine and extra seating which can be pulled out and used if necessary. The view from the window is your entertainment ... simply lovely. Up the wooden, steep stairs are two bedrooms, both with views over the sleepy village. Outside there is a parking space or several and a rustic deck with table, chairs, parasol and bbq, plus two deck chairs. Sit there and enjoy a bottle of something fabulous from the Burgundy region and food you bought earlier to cook (there are no shops in the village) on the BBQ. Alternatively, wander up to La Petit Auberge and let Anna and her husband take care of you. Two other plusses .... the fastest internet we've ever known and lashings of hot water. Go .... and enjoy.

Selten hatten wir eine so eine grandiose Unterkunft ! Ein Ort um die Seele baumeln zu lassen, SpaziergĂ€nge und Wanderungen vor der HaustĂŒr, dazu ein prachtvolles Farbenspiel der herbstlichen WĂ€lder, ein "Indian Summer" fĂŒr den andere bis nach Nordamerika reisen. Dazu kommt eine herzliche Aufnahme durch die Gastgeber, die nicht nur durch das stilvolle und perfekte Ambiente des Feriendomizils verwöhnen ,sondern durch ihr kleines aber feines Restaurant vor Ort. Kurzum - ein ideale Ort fĂŒr Burgundreisende.

Zum ersten Mal im Burgund


... und gleich an einem der landschaftlich schönsten Orte. Die alte Schmiede – ein Haus zum WohlfĂŒhlen und Entspannen; die herrlichen Ausblicke von der Terrasse auf die Wiesen mit den Charolais und auf den Mont Beuvray; das hervorragende Restaurant der Vermieter, die Petite Auberge gleich nebenan; und die Ruhe in diesem schönen kleinen Dorf, die auch durch die wenigen Autos und die Traktoren der Bauern nicht gestört wird, da die Straße unterhalb der Terrasse und des Hauses vorbeifĂŒhrt. Besonders wohl gefĂŒhlt haben wir uns in der Dorfgemeinschaft, die sich hier zwischen den Einheimischen, den zugezogenen HollĂ€ndern und den wenigen GĂ€sten gebildet hat – wir haben unvergessliche Begegnungen gehabt und waren von der Freundlichkeit der Menschen – hier im Dorf wie auch insgesamt im Burgund- mehr als beeindruckt. Autun hat uns sehr gut gefallen, ein schöner Ort mit einem hervorragenden Wochenmarkt und netten CafĂ©s, in denen man sich auch bei grĂ¶ĂŸerer Hitze gut aufhalten kann. Und wenn uns dann noch die beiden Hunde der Vermieter bei unseren abendlichen SpaziergĂ€ngen rund um St. Didier mit seinen vielen herrlichen Ausblicken begleitet haben, dann war alles in Ordnung und wir wollten nicht mehr anderswo sein. Mooie plek aan de rand van de Morvan

De gastvrouw regelde voor ons een plek om onze fietsen veilig te stallen.Inchecken en vertrek verliep vlot. We konden haar gemakkelijk contacteren.Alles was in huis aanwezig ( keuken en badkamer).Het enige minpuntje was het zicht van op het terras : van op de foto's dachten we een zicht te hebben op de omgeving, Dit was enkel zo vanuit een specifieke plek, eigenlijk kijk je op het terras uit op het plein (wel een rustig en mooi plein) en heb je door de planten toch wel een vakantiegevoel op het terras.Heel comfortabel ingericht huis met goede bedden en airconditioning.Een aanrader.
