Unplug in rustic barn idyll near Jels

On a disused farmstead, the old barn has been converted into a vacation apartment where “back to basics” is more than just a phrase. There’s no TV or dishwasher here—just time for each other, a large garden, and a view of the fields.



The apartment is furnished with restored pieces and flea market finds, and many of the materials come directly from the property’s old house: the basement stairs, the kitchen, and the building materials have all been reused and given new purpose. This gives the rooms a handcrafted, authentic feel.



Outside, there’s a large garden with a lawn and colorful perennials. The kitchen garden is used to grow fresh vegetables and fruit, and the view extends out over the fields. The garden offers plenty of space for outdoor living.



The area offers hiking trails along Jels Lake and in Barsbøl Forest, kayaking and paddling on the lakes, and Jels’ outdoor swimming area with a swimming pier. For culture, there’s Christiansfeld, Ribe, Kolding, and the Trapholt Art Museum. Café Frøken Kaff’ was most recently nominated as the No. 2 coffee shop in the country in a public vote.
