If you're a history buff, this area is loaded. Cherokee history is abundant. The very name Eastatoee is Cherokee for "Place of a Green Bird". Just for kicks and giggles, the two lakes Keowee and Jocassee are Cherokee as well. Keowee means "Place of a Mulberry Bush" and Jocassee means "Place of the Lost One" and was named after the Indian Maiden, Jocassee of whom is said to have paddled out into the river and drowned herself because she was not allowed to marry the man of her dreams.
Hagood Mill, which is a 200 year old corn mill is twenty minutes away.
If you like hiking, then you've arrived. The "Bill Morgan Road" is 1/2 mile away and it's foot traffic only for miles. The beautiful Twin Falls is a five minute drive and then a ten minute walk and from there, you can hike the Reedy Cove river for about four miles. Table Rock State Park is fifteen minutes away and if you like a challenge you can hike to the top. For the golfers, we have that too. The Rock Golf Course is a 10 minute drive. Sassafras Mountain: elevation 3,553’. It’s the highest point in the state of South Carolina and a spot to keep in mind as you’re planning summer adventures! The peak straddles not only the line between North and South Carolina but the Eastern Continental Divide; from its summit, four states are visible on a clear day. Still, this scenic viewpoint is one of the most easily accessed “highest points” in the US, perfect for a family day trip from the Cabin.
If you're more reserved and would like to walk down to the "big creek" and fish and maybe take the kids, it's just 100 yrds down the ridge. For the Lake lovers, Lake Keowee is fifteen minutes away and Lake Jocassee is 30 minutes away.
Jumpin' Off Rock is a forty minute drive (it's not that far just a slow drive) and it gives a spectacular view of Lake Jocassee. One of the most beautiful views on the planet is watching the sun set over Carolina Ridge and Lake Jocassee.
And for all the Clemson Tiger fans, you can be at the football stadium in 40 minutes.
