AVOID - Not a 4 star hotel at all

I hate leaving negative reviews, but feel it so important on this occasion. All reviews state could do with updating, that had me fooled as I thought it would be like other hotels which need a little TLC and people moan, no this one needs upgrading, scrubbing, maintenance, and staff training. We have just returned from this hotel, and had we enough money to go elsewhere we would have walked out, but was not in that position and 3.5 hour journey didn't want to go straight home! OUTSIDE POOL IS CLOSED - and has been all year, unlikely to open this year, in case you are going for that reason-not advertised. Food, though nice, slow service and not all ingredients listed be careful! Room grotty, smelly, no air unless patio doors open (when you have a dog with you this is impossible without keeping them on lead). Mattress absolutely disgusting, thank god we didn't see it until the last day!! Poor furniture, uncomfortable, very old and too big for the room leaving no floor space. Cleaning service, non-existent - left the sign out for our room to be cleaned and left floor mat and bath towels in the bath to be replaced, the floor mat rolled back up - soaking wet and covered in hair - and left back in our bath. Dirty wet, oily towels, hung back up for use! Reception staff - lovely, but not much help and stand silent when being spoken to with shrugs and don't knows thrown in, and again very slow. The positive, our view was incredible and the prosecco delicious. That's it
Bathroom floor after "clean"
Floor mat, rolled up soaking wet and covered in hair and placed back in bath to re-use (after 3 days and a "clean")
Carpet after "clean" can't upload more pics, but have plenty!
Mattress!!

Location of the hotel was nice, had places that are walkable to go down to eat. Hotel in general was okay, I felt it has had happier times there, the building itself looked a bit unloved and old and could do with a lick of paint at least. When we’re there the swimming pools were closed, one was in maintenance and the other someone clever smashed glass in the pool so they had to sort that out. It was a real shame as that why we booked there as it had two pools. That said the stay was comfortable, the room was old but okay and we slept very well. I hope they will maintain the hotel as it has potential but definitely needs some investment to it.

Worth a visit

The public spaces/ rooms were amazing. Our bedroom not so. We had a balcony which was great. The carpet was awful patterned but thats just personal taste i guess. The bar was lacking and prices high to eat and drink. But the staff friendly. Not that suitable for disabled.

Unloved and needs a complete refurbish.

Very shabby hotel. Exterior, grounds and furniture all in disrepair and the pool was closed -no mention of this on the website when booking. Restaurant walls.skirting boards and window frames were filthy. Bedroom furniture is ancient, shabby and marked but the room itself was spotless considering what the housekeeping team have to work with. Breakfast good. All staff really good apart from the head waitress on the Thursday morning who was very blunt, unacommodating and not pleasant with other staff. Amazing views but this doesn’t warrant the price.

It’s a lovely old hotel with some real charm. The staff were very good, the room lovely and breakfast very good. One gripe, the bar isn’t anywhere near big enough for the potential customers. Running out of lemonade and getting gin in a half pint glass because they didn’t have any gin glasses isn’t really on but the young girls working it were under the cosh. The other, after seasoning my breakfast with ‘pepper’ only to find it was salt I was told by the waiter, quite confidently that the multi-holed cellar was for salt and the single holed, pepper. Well it got me googling! We’ll be back for sure, it’s a lovely hotel and great value at the price, breakfast a bargain. The indoor pool is very good sadly the outdoor was closed. Staff all very friendly.

The staff is not responsive at all. Before we arrived for 2 days I was desperately trying to contact the hotel about confirming the pet-friendly room. They never responded to me: neither by message on Expedia, nor by email, not by phone (I called them but they didn't help) As a result of course they made me pay additionally for changing the room to a pet-friendly one when we arrived. We paid £165 additionally for 3 days: for parking, dog and changing the room. It reminds me of the low-coster airlines where you pay not much initially but you have to pay additionally for every feature. They also always have just 1 person at the reception desk. And this is for such a large hotel. I know that queues are a part of British culture but it's quite annoying that you always have to wait in the long queue at the reception just because the second desk is always empty. It's definitely not a 4*. Quite tired, not very comfortable, if your windows are the same side as the main entrance, be prepared you will never sleep at night because of very loud jingle of the flags over the entrance. No slippers, no bathrobes as well which is quite uncomfortable given they have a pool in the hotel.

In honesty there was nothing outstandingly good or bad, but in general the hotel décor and furnishing is rather tired and in bad need of a revamp. The room was large, had a good view of the bay, but generally poor. Internal doors didn't catch or lock, including the bathroom, shower leaked onto floor through screen, but water pressure very good and lots of very hot water. The basics for a good hotel are there, but no attention to detail, and management failure for not checking these things. I blame poor management, not the staff, who were very helpful. To give one small example: only one receptionist on duty, even though there were two reception stations, so long queues built up to check in/out or ask for anything. This lead to some guests being rude to the receptionist for no fault of her own. I saw her visibly upset. There should be no need for this. Despite the shortcomings my stay was pleasant enough.
