Our room was lovely and newly refurbished, however there was a lot of building work happening at the hotel. I was made aware before our visit that the lift was not working and there were plenty of staff on hand to help with luggage.

The place is a building site - it should not be open !!! It is a disgrace and absolute travesty that they are open to the public/ taking bookings - there are areas boarded off, noisy machinery, noisy work men shouting and laughing, no lifts working, mattresses piled up on landings on arrival It is a huge disgrace !!!!

Good location but very tired decor

Checked in about an hour early as room was ready after parking in the public car park across the road. The hotel has its own car park which we found out about when checking out but its more expensive overnight than the public car park. Hotel seemed to be underdoing refurbishment of the reception which felt like walking onto a building site. Was offered buffet breakfast for £13.50 if paid the night before or £15.50 if paid in the morning. We found lovely spots in the town to have breakfast at a much lower price. Having paid for a cosy room with sea view, we were anticipating a cosy room with sea view but the room was very basic with budget furnishings and a scaffold built outside the window that spoilt the sea view. Shower was nice and powerful but the bathroom tiles and decor were very dated. The acid test is... would I stay there again? Yes, probably - the rate we paid was worth the location for a place to rest our heads.

Lovely but could be better.

Enjoyed our trip, breakfast was lovely, but should offer more over bar food choice for snacks during the day. I think when you pay 600.00 the parking in there tarmac area carpark should be free. Our room seemed cold unfortunately.

Informed before stay the lift was broken but help with carrying luggage upstairs would be given. I was 3 floors up,I am 67 years old with Arthritic knees. When asked for help with luggage I was told there isn’t anyone. I then went to my room and someone was already in there! Car park space allocated was blocked by 2 other cars and the reception had no idea where the cars had come from!

not suitable for public use until all the renovati

I am currently working at Whitby During my previous first visit, I noticed the hotel was undergoing major decorating and refurbishment which I understood and appreciated. However, during my most recent stay, I was extremely disappointed with the room I was allocated. It was well below the standard expected from a hotel, and the only clean facility was the newly renovated bathroom. Overall, the experience did not meet my expectations, especially given the improvements that seemed to be underway. I am believed the accommodation was not up to a standard and I would like to have my money back

Whitby weekend

Lovely weekend in Whitby at the Royal Hotel. Excellent location overlooking the sea front and we had upgraded our room which offered the most amazing sea views and had recently been refurbished. However, i was disappointed to find out when we arrived that the whole hotel was under going refurbishment work which i wasnt informed of at the time of booking. It didnt really affect our stay but obviously the hotel isnt looking at its best astetically at the moment. We also had a couple of issues with our room which i was disappointed with given how much we paid for the room. I mentioned that the room had been refurbished recently and the bathroom was bramd new and beautiful. However, on both mornings of our stay there was a foul smell of drains in the bathroom which suggested an issue with the plumbing. We also had an issue with the electrics on the motning of our second day where we found none of the sockets to be working. Turns out the coffee machine had blown the fuse. Lastly, there was quite a draft blowing theough the large windows in the room but i appreciate that the building is listed and maybe this is why they are not double glazed. One thing we did enjoy was the food at breakfast however, even though we pre booked a table, there was no cutlery or mugs set out and we were told to just take them from other tables in the restaurant. No coffee / tea machine either so there was often a queue waiting for coffee as the percolator needed replensishing regularly.
