6 Aussie destinations every family has to visit at least once

It’s easy to get caught up in all of the amazing destinations the world has to offer and forget all of the incredible places on our very own doorstep. We reckon these six are absolute must-do’s for making special family holiday memories.

1. Gold Coast

Theme parks, beautiful beaches, a buzzing food scene, spacious apartments and a gorgeous hinterland for exploring make the GC a no-brainer in the family holiday department.

2. Uluru

It doesn’t get much more iconic than a visit to the Northern Territory’s Red Centre. Kids and adults alike will be in awe of the iconic rock that is so familiar to us all and seeing it for the first time is pretty incredible! Time your visit for sunrise or sunset to see it in all its glory.

3. Canberra

Don’t let the thought of all those politicians or memories of primary school excursions turn you off, the nation’s capital has plenty to offer for a family getaway. The hands-on science world of Questacon and the miniature world of Cockington Green are sure to please the little ones, along with cycling around Lake Burley Griffin, the history of the Australian War Memorial and gourmet delights with the city’s growing food scene.

4. Thredbo

A snow holiday is a box you just have to tick as a family and it doesn’t get much more family friendly than Thredbo. From Kids’ Thursday night Optic Flare Runs to learn-to-ski lessons and even a blow-up obstacle course and waterslide at the leisure centre (for when you’ve had your skiing fix for the day), you’ll have seriously tuckered out kids by nighttime.

5. Broome

Watch the sunset over glorious Cable Beach, go on a camel ride, enjoy resort life at Cable Beach Club (the family pool and water playground will be winners with the kids. If you get a chance to tag-team on kiddy watch, make time for the adults-only lagoon pool and day spa) and visit Sun Pictures, the world’s oldest picture gardens still in operation.

6. Hobart

It might not be the first Aussie city you think of for a family getaway but the relaxed vibe and clean fresh air of the country’s second oldest capital is just the place to slow things down a notch or two with all the comforts of a city escape. MONA is a must-do (be sure to catch the ferry there and look out for the sheep!). Get your nature on with a drive up to Mount Wellington for gorgeous views or hit Bruny Island for a wilderness cruise you’ll all be talking about for years to come.
