33 reasons why we heart summer holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. No, we’re not talking about Christmas (although that does happen to conveniently fall at the same time). We’re talking about summer and more specifically the gloriousness that is summer holidays.
We asked the Wotif team for some of their favourite things about summer getaways. Warning: if you don’t have your summer break locked in, this list will entice you to getting booking faster than you can say slip, slop, slap.

  1. Putting on your out-of-office and actually meaning it when you say you won’t be checking emails.
  2. There’s the sound of crashing waves to wake up to instead of a beeping alarm clock.
  3. It’s the only time it’s okay to wear thongs every day, or better yet, go barefoot.
  4. Mangoes. Need we say more?
  5. There’s no school drop offs or kid’s weekend sports so hello sleep-ins.
  6. You can actually read one of those books that’s been sitting on your bedside table all year.
  7. Wearing your swimwear instead of undies, and not because you haven’t done any washing, but because you’re on the beach 24/7.
  8. Cold beer.
  9. Lonnggggggg sunny days.
  10. Balmy nights.
  11. ‘Rush hour’ meaning passing something on the beach during your morning jog. And you both actually smiled and said hi.
  12. Alfresco dining.
  13. People are just damn nicer.
  14. Having at least one meal per day cooked on the BBQ.
  15. There might not be anything on free-to-air TV but that’s the perfect excuse to binge on all trashy TV series.
  16. Doing all of the water activities: surfing, kayaking, water-skiing.
  17. The sound of cicadas chirping.
  18. Daylight savings, especially in the northern hemisphere, where days don’t seem to end
  19. Your legs are super soft legs because you’re constantly using sunscreen… and then Aloe Vera after a long day at the beach.
  20. You won’t use a hair straightener (even though this seems impossible to your pre-holiday self and you will still pack it).
  21. Sneaky afternoon ice creams. Whether it’s a fancy gelato or a Golden Gaytime at breakfast, ice cream is acceptable at any time of day whatever your age.
  22. Sunset rooftop cocktails.
  23. Ice cold smoothies and frosé for breakfast, lunch and dinner – no judgement on which beverage you choose at what time of day 😉
  24. Tan lines, the ultimate evidence that you’ve actually been out of the office for a decent amount of time.
  25. Time with your friends and family
  26. Time away from your crazy work colleagues (there’s always one).
  27. Pool bars (and Happy Hour at said pool bars).
  28. Afternoon siestas, best enjoyed as you drift off to the dulcet tones of the Channel 9 cricket commentary team.
  29. Said afternoon siestas only made better when enjoyed in a hammock.
  30. Setting the hotel air-con to ‘arctic’ and not feeling the power bill pain.
  31. Time with Family and Friends – it’s a festive season. Eat, drink, nap – repeat.
  32. Going for weeks without putting the oven on because it’s all about easy salads, seafood and BBQ’s.
  33. It’s the only time you’ll probably wear that dress you just had to buy in Bali.
