Aotearoa New Zealand is one of the world’s most awesome destinations and we’re so excited to be able to travel there again. It’s also home to some incredible stays, perfect for when you want to splash out. Here are nine of our faves 💚
Insider tip: These AMAZING stays are also super popular and often book up fast (sometimes months in advance!). They’re well worth the wait but make sure you plan ahead so you don’t miss out.
1. Huka Lodge
Go ultra-luxe at the stunning Huka Lodge. What started as a simple fishing lodge is now one of the world’s most indulgent destinations and a favourite spot for celebs craving privacy. There are secret gardens to explore, as well as the nearby Huka Falls that just seem to whisper “Instagram me”. Huka Lodge is ideal for romance too, offering romantic candlelit dinners under the stars, big soaking tubs in each room, and the all-inclusive brekkie, dinner and pre-dinner drinks 😍
A five-star lakeside escape awaits at Eichardt’s Private Hotel in Queenstown, a historic 1800s hotel that oozes luxury. Each boudoir-style apartment has spectacular views and a real fireplace to warm up in front of after a day on the slopes. Fill up on your free brekkie at The Grille, sip your complimentary pre-dinner drink and take advantage of the turndown service, which includes a handmade chockie left on your pillow. Eichardt’s bar is famous for its tapas menu, but the real treat is the Vault – a private spa experience set in an old gold vault. Classy.
Live the country life at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers. You know, if farm life was extravagant, chic and came with a 24-hour gym 😝 Check out the sheep farm, take a yoga class or tee off on the Cape Kidnappers Golf Course – hailed as one of the top 30 in the world. Thirsty? There are complimentary cocktails every night from 6pm. The Farm is a hit with wildlife lovers too. Visit in the warmer months – between September and April – to see the gannet seabird colonies.
Immerse yourself in some of the most spectacular scenery in the world at Matakauri Lodge on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The backdrop is dramatic, especially when viewed from the infinity pool. Take advantage of the daily cocktail hour and make sure to save half a day for the Southern Lakes Photography Tour. What’s a holiday without holiday snaps, right?
When it comes to spectacular stays, there’s nothing more impressive than staying at an actual castle. And that’s why Larnach Lodge in Dunedin is an absolute must-visit. Situated within the grounds of the famous Larnarch Castle, it’s full of country charm. Naturally, a stay at Larnach Lodge includes entry to the castle and its gorgeous gardens. You can even have dinner at the castle (for an extra charge). Contact the property after you’ve made your booking.
A luxurious lakeside getaway the whole family can enjoy? Yes, please! With spacious apartments and villas available, as well as optional cots and on-site babysitting, Peppers on the Point – Lake Rotorua is perfect for families. It’s also set in a former 1930s mansion – so, you know, fancy. The kids will love meeting Sugar and Milo, the property’s two resident donkeys (not to mention miniature horses, sheep and chickens), while you’ll love the awesome massage and beauty treatments. Make sure you check out the private beach! The team at Peppers can help you sort out a fishing license if you’re keen to cast a line 🎣
A highlight of the Marlborough Sounds, the Bay of Many Coves Resort is a five-star stay that can only be reached by water taxi (unless you want to really splash out with a private helicopter ride 😲 Contact the property after you’ve made your booking). Guests receive a complimentary cheese platter on arrival, which is awesome because you’ll need your energy to take on the stunning 72km Queen Charlotte Track – right on the resort’s doorstep. Or just bliss out in your own little patch of paradise, with clear skies for stargazing and incredible dining options.
You’ve got to love a tree house – especially when it looks like this. Hapuku Lodge’s five tree houses are designed to be your “bedroom in the sky”. Their massive windows make the most of the fantastic views (there’s Kaikōura’s mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other). If you can tear yourself away, there’s also an on-site sauna and great mountain-biking trails to explore. Visit between May and June if you’d like to have a go at picking olives
9. SO/ Auckland
