The medieval quarter of "Castello", as well as being the main of the four historic districts of the city, is the symbol and heart of the city of Cagliari. The Pisans founded this district in the thirteenth century, fortified it, providing it with walls, towers and bastions and established the headquarters of civil, military and religious power. Since then, until the second post-war period, Castello has always hosted the palaces of power and noble residences, such as the headquarters of the main institutions of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
Inside its mighty walls that still surround a large part of the perimeter of the Castle, there are the impressive Pisan towers of San Pancrazio and the Elephant, the Bastion of Saint Remy and the Porta dei Leoni, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the narrow alleys and ancient noble palaces, such as the Royal Palace or Vice Regio, the museum center of the Citadel of Museums, the shops of antique dealers and artisans.
