Monkton House was built by the monks of Newbattle Abbey as a safe haven from English invaders and sits in 2 acres of private grounds. Three of the opulent bedrooms have four-poster beds, and there are plenty of unusual features. There are gun loops and arrow slits, one of the drawing rooms is inspired by the Prince Regent’s Brighton Pavilion and hand-painted in maximalist chinoiserie, and there’s even a secret room. You can imagine yourself in another time when you stay here.
