Kata Beach has real small-town charm. Enjoy a massage, get a haircut or see a movie in one of the old cinemas (residents often gather in the theatre to watch cult films like "King Kong"). Later, go shopping for a bathing suit, parasol or a fun pair of flip-flops, and then mail a postcard from the town's post office on Patak Road. Luxury dining is most posh in South Kata, where the large hotels are built over the beach. Come here for the elegant and ornate Thai dining rooms and the busy outdoor bars and dance floors. Mingle with visitors from all over the world and enjoy the ocean air, dark nights and romantic lights. Toast to good fortune (and getting barrelled) with a neighbour before heading back to your room and letting the ocean lull you to sleep.
