Once a busy whaling port and trading centre, the Mangonui of today has a far more relaxed atmosphere. While you stay in our Mangonui accommodation the town make come across as a sleepy fishing village at first glance, it is the main hub of beautiful Doubtless Bay and still used as a commercial fishing wharf.
Mangonui’s long history is obvious during a stay in a Mangonui motel, as historic buildings are everywhere, housing bookshops, café’s, art & craft stores and of course the Mangonui’s famous Fish n Chip shop. Grab your food to go and head down to the shore to see the fishing trawlers being unloaded, or cast a line for yourself.
Take a walk from your Mangonui hotel and visit Rangikapiti Pa, a Maori fort offering commanding views of the Bay and the surrounding hills. There is also an excellent three kilometre heritage trail that you can follow through the town; the walk includes St Andrews Church, which sits atop Beach Rd overlooking Mangonui.
