Holidays To Marlborough
New Zealand’s wine capital, Marlborough has a reputation for crisp Sauvignon Blanc and spectacular natural sights.
In February it’s the home of a food and wine festival, but no matter what time of year you come, it’s always a great destination for food and wine. In Marlborough you’ll find sunken valleys with green island peaks, a long hiking trail, and more than 40 cellar doors. Stay in one of our hotels in the Marlborough region, where the wine AND the scenery are sure to refresh you.HistoryThe region where the country’s Polynesians settled, Marlborough began growing Sauvignon Blanc in the 70s. These days, 75% of New Zealand’s wine production takes place in Marlborough.Things to doVisit Marlborough in February for the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival, where quality local wine, home-grown food and entertainment takes over the green plains of Brancott Vineyard. Marlborough’s many other wineries have the goods the rest of the year too. With over 20,000 hectares of grape-growing soil, you’re sure to have a grape time here. You know what else SOUNDS good? Marlborough Sounds. These sunken valleys are filled with the brilliant blue water of the Pacific Ocean, and islands and peninsulas of green trees rise from the water. Immerse yourself in the beauty and peace of the area with a kayaking adventure or hike through native forest. If you’re a dedicated hiker, test your limits by tackling the Queen Charlotte Track. At 70kms long, you’ll need a few days for this one, but you can hike with an experienced guide and rest in resorts and B&Bs along the way. You’ll be guaranteed a good look at those incredible Marlborough Sounds views. If you don’t want to hike the track, bike the track – and make sure you stop for a dip in the sea along the way.Marlborough is a haven for arts, culture and fascinating museums. Head to its capital, Blenheim – one of NZ’s sunniest towns - and drop into the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. You’ll find a collection of World War One aircraft owned by Peter Jackson himself.Need more heritage and culture? Explore the Marlborough Arts and Crafts Trail to see artists in their own work spaces. Visit the town of Picton’s Heritage and Whaling Museum, and catch writers in conversation at the Marlborough Book Festival.Shopping and diningIf you feel like picking up a souvenir, take a look at some of the book shops, op shops and other kinds of shops in Blenheim.
