What an absolute find, a true revelation. Okay, Newport itself may not be the most salubrious of towns, but the Mercure Hotel is in a league of its own. The hotel is situated right in the town centre, very close to the Friars Walk Shopping Centre and it’s undercover 24 hour car park. We parked there for 2 nights, a 5 minute walk to the hotel, and only cost just over £15.
The hotel itself, looks a relatively new building from the exterior, it was in fact built in 1966. It has 135 rooms over something like 15 floors. Everything in the hotel is immaculate and spotlessly clean, from the foyer, to the very plush carpeted walk areas and the bedrooms. We stayed on the 5th floor overlooking the terraced bar area on the 3rd floor. The bedroom was very roomy, clean and well appointed. Included was a free safe, ironing board and iron, wall mounted TV, ample wall plugs. The bed was extremely comfortable.
As mentioned, the terrace bar on the 3rd floor was a lovely touch, weather permitting, able to enjoy drinks outside. This room also doubled as a dining room and breakfast room. The breakfast choice was plentiful including a cooked breakfast option, which was very tasty. We did not eat in the restaurant, so unable to pass comment.
The staff were all very friendly and efficient.
We have stayed in many hotels in various parts of the UK and overseas. I have to say, hand on heart, that is one of the most pleasurable hotel stays we have experienced.
Thank you Mercure.
