The hotel was very clean, staff was very friendly, check in was easy and the staff was able to accommodate my needs for an early check in. Sara at front desk was very helpful and attentive to all my needs. Breakfast had a great variety of fruits, pastries, eggs, breads, cheeses, etc… the location is great walking distance to Copacabana beach, Ipanema beach and Arpoador beach. Lots of restaurants and bars close by.

I asked for a quiet room and was assured it would be very quiet. I was put beside 3 very loud young women who like to party late. The walls are paper thin. Needless to say I didn't sleep well. Beware if you want a quiet hotel.

Breakfast, along with a trove of other things, is out of management's control. Coffee is an odyssey to get. Either no pump jars, or substitute broken machines, it takes quite a while to have your morning caffeine dose. Food choices are limited, yoghurt is watery at best, and good luck getting a spoon.

The staff were lovely, absolutely wonderful; the location, unsurpassable. In terms of the amenities, however, this was four-star in name only. The gym was a perfunctory affair, with enough space for no more than two people to work out at once, and the swimming pool was diminuitive. In the bathroom, there was shower gel in lieu of antibacterial handwash (I had to buy my own), and shampoo was not provided - even the toilet paper was of the lowest quality. There were no tea or coffee-making facilities in the room, which are to be expected at a hotel of this grade. The "minibar" had only full-sugar cokes and still waters, no snacks and no alcohol. The breakfast had no whole or unprocessed meats and the coffee was very basic. Based on the facilities versus the price, I could not recommend the Arena Ipanema, despite the great service.
