All staff were very friendly and happy to help. The restaurant options were expansive and the meals themselves were excellent, containing obvious local produce. We were impressed!

Nice location, clean rooms but cramped and could do with a revamp. Minimal facilities in the rooms (no table and chairs, no cutlery or dishes).

This is a really good stopping point if you are driving from Picton to regions further south via the inland highway. It is an old-style alpine lodge - as indicated by the name! It's all about the log-cabin in the cold climate type feel. Double doors as you walk in to reception, doube glazed rooms. I was very happy with my room. I was a little concerned because other reviewers descibed it as tired and shabby. I don't agree - it was totally clean, the shower brand new and the beds comfortable. Totally reasonable for the price. The food in restaurant is a mixed bag but then again they are catering to wide clientelle - there is a backpacker section at this place too. The wine on the list is extremely good value - there is not a huge mark-up over retail pricing. What really makes this place special though is the staff. Two rather out of the ordinary things happened. When I arrived, the frame on my glasses had come apart and Leigh behind the desk fixed them for me. The other is that one of us left our passport behind in the room. The staff emailed us immediately on finding it. It was too late to collect it and we were able to fly home using a driving licence. They have then mailed it to us. Very impressed with the service here

A character hotel close to the ski fields and lake

Pros: The atmosphere and the rooms were great. It was also busy, giving an indication that it was value for money.
Cons: Nothing that I can think of.
Location: Close to Nelson and the mountains this is the most northern of the South Island ski fields. There are also lots of walking tracks and the two lakes.
I liked this hotel as our unit was handy to the restaurant/bar and we could park right outside. No stairs! Good sized bathroom with a shower. Good cooking facilities with a store across the road so you could easily get your own meals. We were there in the summer so did not use the hot tub near the restaurant. However it would have been very useful after a days skiing I would think. Restaurant and bar were very busy the night we stayed but the duty manager was most helpful and courteous while we waited for a table.. A very pretty alpine setting for the hotel and just over the hill was Lake Rotoiti for boating and fishing. It was not so peaceful though as the boaties arrived en masse early in the morning with their kids to go wakeboarding and tow biscuits spoiling the atmosphere for those admiring the view.
