Walk around Mirror Lake for a couple hours of peaceful scenery and window-shopping. While we’re on the subject, Lake Placid (the actual body of water) is located about 7 km away. Even if you aren’t sportsy, you can snap gorgeous photos from the lift and watch world-class athletes train at the Olympic Ski Jump Complex. To the south, take a tour of the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, the home of the famous abolitionist. Before you go home, you’ve got to try the slopes for yourself at Jack Rabbit Trail, if you travel between December and February. Otherwise, take advantage of the warm season with a hike through the Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails. A day in the woods deserves dinner and locally made wine followed by some serious relaxation in your Lake Placid hotel.

Great location. Staff were nice, view was pretty, everything was clean. A lot of the space felt freshly renovated. Large common area seemed cozy. Check in was easy. The outside of building is painted black, looks like it was a lighter color underneath and there weren’t enough coats of black paint to fully cover it, so it looked a little run down from the outside. Definitely not run down inside. The room was nice — the shower has a half wall kind of thing (not a full door or curtain) which I didn’t love, but not a big deal. Someone else’s long hair was on the bag holding the hair dryer, not the end of the world. The only really bad part — we woke up during the night a dozen times from a terrible metallic screeching noise. I had tried messing with the window to fix it, couldn’t figure it out — finally at 1am, short of asking to switch rooms, my fiance slammed the window closed super hard and the sound disappeared. Had to do it to both windows. Lastly, after a long day I wanted to watch some tv and go to sleep early. Some of the buttons on the remote didn’t work. I couldn’t screencast from my phone or log into any streaming apps. Ok, we’ll just watch cable then — but for some reason it was buffering and skipping the whole time. Oh well.
