Good atmosphere, our kind of hotel

Cons:The lift could be replaced with a modern one that doesn't need muscle to open. A room fan may be needed if the SF weather actually ever gets hot!

From the moment I walked in the door I was pleasantly surprised by the Hotel Des Arts in San Fransisco's central business district. A friendly, low-key altmosphere in the reception area was a good start. Up in the historic lift to our room and again, a good fit with our needs - double bed, a window that opened to the outside letting in the cool SF air! En suite bathroom, storage cupboard, small table and even a small bar fridge (noisy, but arn't they all!)
The great location is directly opposite the entrance to Chinatown and only a couple of blocks from Union Square. Breakfast is included (very basic, suggest supplement with BYO cereals, fruit, etc) It's possible to store bags if your flight is later in the day, and access to restrooms on the reception level is also possible to get ready for the trip. I/we will probably stay there again if we return to SF.

Great location, but loud and cramped
We've stayed in SF before so we knew a bit about what to expect, but the rooms were smaller than the pictures, and smaller than the display video they have playing in the lobby.
Most SF hotels are loud, but this is the loudest we've ever stayed at, they were worried about St Patricks, but the truth was the alley behind the hotel had it's massive metal dumpsters emptied every morning between 3 and 4am, which was much worse.
We asked to be moved and they wouldn't do it, saying they couldn't, even though the rooms were free.

Interesting, arty hotel, close to Chinatown
Pros:The artwork on the walls and the comfort the hotel provided. It was a convenient location to the cable cars and Chinatown.
Cons:The elevator service could be fixed, but it didn't really bother me as the staff carried the luggage up and down.
Location:Chinatown, Cable-car line, Shopping only a couple of blocks away.
I really enjoyed staying at Hotel Des Arts - it is close to the cable car line and close to Chinatown. The tour companies will collect from there, and it was a really interesting place to stay. I loved that it was an old hotel as it had a lot of charm, and the rooms were beautifully painted and well maintained. The bed was sooo comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
