The location is beautiful, but right outside our room was a dump, with all kinds of garbage, about 50 feet from our door. The view was amazing, but one huge window had water calcium stains between the double panes, throughout the whole window. At night, one blind doesn't shut all the way, one blind is completely missing, and the one in the bedroom is partially broken, leaving anyone outside a prime nighttime view inside the whole apartment. Our best time was outside the room on the cliff, looking out at the ocean. I could find no way to contact anyone about any of these issues, as check-in and out are done online, with no other communication options. Also, the pictures to book the room look like you can walk out the back door right onto the sand. Nope! It's down a cliff.

The Oceanfront Inn is a hidden gem on California’s Lost Coast. The views are absolutely breathtaking—you can watch whales, sea lions, and sunsets right from your room. Everything was spotless, comfortable, and thoughtfully done, with a peaceful vibe that makes it easy to relax and unwind. A perfect place to escape, recharge, and enjoy the beauty of Shelter Cove.

What a view!

What a view we had from the back door of the room! There are chairs and a small table overlooking the black sands beach and ocean. Very peaceful. There were seal lions and birds on the nearby rocks. It's a great place to relax. The room was very comfortable and clean with all the expected amenities. The hotel also has a small restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch, but not every day, I think.

My night at Shelter Cove

We stayed in the jacuzzi room with balcony. Room was nice and clean, balcony view was great, and the Jacuzzi tub in the room was perfect for warming up after being in the cold. The place needs a little maintenance on the exterior, our bathroom sink was old and outdated with cracks in it. It didn’t have a drain cover so you could see down the drain at the mold build up in the pipe, which was a little gross for me. The biggest issue was the drive to the place. It’s 22 miles off Hwy 1, but the road is very slow and winding. Wasn’t able to drive very fast and it took at least an hour or more to get there and then back to the highway the next morning. There was a nice coffee shop on the floor level with some pretty good pastries.

Mediocre at best

Hotel is mediocre, towels and linens are extremely cheap. The upstairs rooms do have a gorgeous ocean view. Paid for a King suite with Ocean view and hot tub. After checking in room did not have a hot tub, called manger and was notified that there’s only 2 rooms have hot tubs and those two were occupied. Had to explain that we should receive a refund since we paid extra and apparently they just book rooms that don’t exist. Restaurant downstairs is the best part about the hotel.

This inn is beautiful and the oceanfront room was amazing. There aren’t many amenities and the internet was slow but the sights made up for it and after you go through that treacherous drive to get there it is nice to have a quiet place to rest. The bed was somewhat comfortable. The water pressure wasn’t great. There was one restaurant open the afternoon we arrived so there want much of a choice. The cafe attached to the inn had pretty good breakfast. I would stay there again.

5-star experience in a 3.5-star property

Shelter Cove is an absolute GEM, WAY off the beaten path. The hotel is in a prime location with beautiful views and direct access to black sands beaches, tide pools and even a lighthouse! The hotel is still being renovated, so it's not perfect. But the staff is helpful and the location is wonderful.

The view to the ocean was world class. For 350+ per night, it would be nice for the balcony door to slide easily; maybe clean the bird poop splatters off the windows; and get improve the wifi situation so guests can use the TV and check their phones. I know this is a remote place, but the cafe downstairs has solid wifi 24/7 . We wished we had checked their password!

Made a reservation for a king bed with an ocean view and a jetted tub. Arrived to a Room on the ground, with no ocean view and no tub. It was unacceptable! Called the property manager and had to complain in order to get a room closer to what I reserved. It still didn’t have a jetted tub, I was told that’s all they had. They also sent me the door opening codes to two other guests rooms along with their room numbers. Room issues: leaky fridge, electric sounds/humming throughout the night, uncomfortable Bed, no jetted tub. Extremely slow wi-fi, streaming/devices were interrupted throughout stay. Management didn’t respond about making things right. Just charged me and didn’t respond to my feedback.
