I booked because of the historical connection and I wasn’t disappointed. Really nicely done rooms with a great story connected to each.

Lovely place to stay.

Pros: The eye for detail, the little 'extra's' It was like stepping back in time, but with all the luxuries of today!
Cons: Just keep it as it is
Location: We came just to relax, so didn't do much, except a few walks.

Comfortable shared cottage style accommodation with plenty of space and parking. Restaurant and bar are worth a visit also, great food and historical information about Kumara is an interesting read.

A great little stopover

Pros: Everything
Cons: Not much here
Location: Hokitika, Westport, Arthurs Pass, Greenstone carving, Shanytown etc etc etc
Kumara is positioned perfectly when you come from Christchurch going to the West coast as it is right on the doorstep of Hokitika to the south and Westport to the north. We stayed in a cottage that had four differently named rooms, each with its own en suite and a communal kitchen, lounge area which was well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. We went across the road to the Theatre Royal restaurant for our evening meal and it was superb and very well priced. the staff were super friendly and while we ate a bar patron played the piano which was really great. While it is a bar/restaurant it appeared that families were welcomed and enjoyed the experience of the famed West Coast hospitality. We will go back there again when we want to discover more of that area

Interesting attractive cottage

Pros: Clean, tidy and very nice surroundings inside. The kitchen was only OK.
Location: We like visiting the West Coast, coming often for business, and enjoy the activities available and especially the scenery.
We booked in at 3.00pm and everything looked attractive despite the day being very cold and very wet. We then carried on to Hokitika to work returning after dinner at approx. 7.00pm. The house was extremely cold with the bedroom heater affording very minimal warmth,. The firewood supplied for the log fire in the lounge was very wet and almost impossible to light even though some kindling was supplied. The 5 fin column heater was not adequate for such a large space and we could not use the fan heater in the lounge as the damaged bearings made it too noisy. The bed needed an electric blanket for use in the winter months. There were plenty of covers but it was just too cold at first. In the morning the house had warmed up with us leaving the 5-fin on all night but there was no more wood for the log fire. The bed needs an electric blanket. The logfire needs adequate dry wood. The kitchen needs cleaning supplies and a tidy up.

Lovely cottage

Pros: Homely feel
Cons: Oil the squeaky bed in the room furthermost from the road. Add WiFi to the cottage (extension from the hotel)
Lovely cottage with 4 bedrooms, each with en-suites and shared kitchen, lounge/dinning & laundry.

Not all good news

Pros: Decor
Cons: Wifi and TV coverage
Location: Not much to do apart from walk around the streets reading the historical notices.
There is no doubt this is a beautifully finished hotel restoration and much has been lauded on the decor and fixture and fittings. However, even with the nice touches of hair brushes in the drawers and little trinkets throughout the room and bathroom I hate when the management totally ignore customer complaints and continue behaving as though the issue had not been raised before. The flaw with this hotel is the lack of wifi and decent TV although it is listed on websites as available. I found complaints dating back to December 2014 and nothing has been done about it. The wifi connected but would not load a website. The TV was tucked away inside the wardrobe along with the tea making facilities. The TV was therefore quite small and had a lousy picture, minimal channels to choose from and only one sky channel. That channel showed a movie with a parental lock. The tv remote did not operate with sky so it was not possible to install a code even if there was one. The manager was called and said he would find the remote and come back but we never saw him again. A night in a hotel in the middle of nowhere without TV or internet is pretty boring in these modern times and they should either sort this problem out or reduce the rates. The meals are expensive and although my roast pork fillet was delicious the fish and chips were not. The fish was tasteless because it was cut too thin and the batter was overcooked. I noticed it was served the same way to everyone.

Real West Coast hospitality

Pros: Friendly, unpretentious and welcoming.
Cons: My bedroom faced the street, so dual curtains (translucent for privacy + thicker for warmth/blackout) would have allowed me to get dressed in daylight
Location: Kumara is central to both Hokitika and Greymouth, near Lake Brunner, Shantytown and all the other heritage and natural attractions of the West Coast.
I stayed in the cottage across the road, with a cosy log fire and comfy room, very reasonably priced. With 3 bedrooms (all with ensuite) a large lounge and full kitchen, this would be great for a family or small group. Across the road, I enjoyed a pub meal by the fire, and could have joined the locals for the Thursday quiz night. Nothing was too fancy, service friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely stay there again.
