Holidays To Ueno
Admit it: You’ve been thinking about a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of modern life—and you sure would like some cherry blossoms to go with it.
We’ve got good news for you. Ueno isn't completely free of tall buildings, but it is a taste of Tokyo before the skyscrapers took over. Now primarily a residential neighbourhood, Ueno is Tokyo's cultural hub, where museums are all over and cherry blossoms give the sky a pretty hue at certain times of the year. Don't worry this is still Tokyo, Japan, so you're never too far from fresh fish, sushi or rapid transit to get you to other parts of the city.
Things to Do in Ueno
Spring in Ueno is the time for hanami, or "flower viewing", so Ueno packages booked for April come with a side order of picnics under cherry blossom trees in Ueno Park, across from the train station. If you miss the floral splendour, don't fret the sprawling park's temples, shrines, lily pad pond and pleasant wooden pathways are accessible year-round. However, the park's main attraction is the Ueno Zoo, where you can observe lemurs and gush over the resident pandas.
From the zoo, you can walk for about 10 minutes (or use one of Wotif’s Ueno car hire deals) to reach the Tokyo National Museum, which holds a massive Japanese art collection featuring pottery, sculptures, wood blocks, kimonos, masks and scrolls. There are also samurai swords, but don't touch them, no matter how much you want to practice your swashbuckling skills.
Ueno deals give you a "deal" on museums: The National Museum of Nature and Science and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum are all less than one kilometre away from the zoo. Visit the National Museum of Western Art if you want to put on your philosopher's cap a cast of Rodin's famous statue "The Thinker" is housed here, along with original works by 19th- and 20th-century impressionist painters.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
Ueno holiday packages aren’t complete without a little shopping. Ameyoko is the area's best-known shopping street, featuring a large outdoor market. Buy fresh food and all types of consumer goods, including clothing, toiletries and souvenirs.
If snack food is your culinary staple, sample the food stalls in Ueno and try dango, a seasoned rice flour dumpling. Pick from expensive restaurants near Ueno Park serving Japanese cuisine, or cheap eateries near the Ueno train station. Local dishes include tonkatsu (pork cutlets) and unagi (eel). Top your evening off with a drink at a nearby bar.
Ueno bars are a mix of traditional teahouses and pubs dedicated to Japanese beer. You will come across tiny drinking establishments, often with a mix of local and visiting clientele. Don't book our Ueno deals expecting dance clubs in the area, but plan to take in Rakugo, traditional Japanese storytelling.
