Fitzroy Penthouse — A Historic Warehouse Conversion
Set inside the iconic MacRobertson chocolate factory, circa 1880, this is one of just seventeen apartments in a genuinely rare piece of Melbourne history — not the kind of "heritage" that just means old carpet and a plaque out front. It's spacious, stylish, and full of original industrial character, tucked into a quiet pocket of Fitzroy that somehow still puts you close to everything.
The Space
120m² across two levels, plus a 20m² rooftop terrace.
What You Actually Get
Four air-conditioning units keep the whole place comfortable year-round, no matter which floor you're on — genuinely rare for a warehouse conversion, most of which seem to run either freezing or tropical. The kitchen has stone benchtops and high-end appliances, for the days you're feeling ambitious rather than ordering in. The furniture is bespoke, including original 1970s Australian designer armchairs and a custom dining table, and there's genuine art on the walls, including a piece from acclaimed Australian artist Jasper Knight — so you can tell people you stayed somewhere with actual provenance, not just a print from a homewares chain. There's a 55" UHD Smart TV with Netflix, a loft-style king bedroom overlooking the living area below, and two downstairs living spaces, one with a full green plant wall that does a lot of heavy lifting for the "urban sanctuary" feeling. A large study with a desk and sofa bed rounds it out, useful whether you're working or just need somewhere to put an extra guest.
The Location, Without the Spin
You're in one of Fitzroy's quieter pockets, but with over 600 restaurants, bars and cafés within a 5-minute walk, "quiet" is relative — quiet for Fitzroy, not quiet for anywhere else on earth. Smith Reserve and Triangle Park are close by if you need some green space between meals, and Brunswick Street — genuinely one of Melbourne's best strips — is a few steps from your front door. The CBD is a 20-minute walk, or a couple of minutes on the No. 11 tram, which is free if you stay within the city grid.
Where to Eat (We've Actually Been)
Cutler & Co., Gertrude St — Fitzroy's benchmark restaurant since 2009, and it still hasn't put a foot wrong. Book ahead, dress up a little.
Vegie Bar, Brunswick St — the easiest, most reliable plant-based room in the suburb. No fuss, no negotiating with a vegetarian in the group.
Jim's Greek Tavern, Johnston St — an institution for over 50 years. Go hungry, leave regretting nothing.
Naked for Satan, Brunswick St — Spanish tapas downstairs, a rooftop bar upstairs, and a name that gets a reaction every time you mention where you're headed.
Lune Croissanterie — less a bakery, more a pilgrimage. Worth the queue at least once.
