Holidays To Adelaide

There’s a reason South Australia’s capital is known as “the 20-minute city”: just a short drive will take you from the centre of it to the beach or the hills (and their wine region).

Adelaide has live music galore, fine food and wine, and plenty of events to fill up your calendar. Book your Adelaide hotel with us and, less than 20 minutes later, you’ll have an Adelaide stay sorted for less.HistoryIn 1836, Colonel Light chose Adelaide as Australia’s first free colony and named it after the King of England's wife, Queen Adelaide. Only five years after the city's settlement, the famous Adelaide Gaol was built, as well as the Government House – both of which you can visit today. As well as being the capital of the only Aussie state with no convict history, Adelaide is famous for its large number of churches (although these days it has more restaurants and bars). And with a population of just over one million people, it’s pretty spacious too.Things to doYou don’t have to go far to find something to do (remember, this is “the 20-minute city”). Wander the Adelaide Botanic Gardens for relaxing green parklands and rare plants and flowers. You can visit the Amazon Waterlily Pavilion, a glasshouse housing the mysterious Victoria Amazonica Waterlily that only blooms at night. The South Australian Museum is home to the country’s largest collection of Aboriginal artifacts, and the Art Gallery of SA has one of its most impressive art collections. And then there’s the non-profit charity-based Adelaide Zoo, which has more than 2500 animals.Glenelg Beach is just a 25-minute vintage tram ride away. Across the street from the seaside cafes and shops of Mosely Square, you’ll find the Glenelg Jetty, a nice place for a walk and some sweeping ocean views. You can snorkel, swim with dolphins or just enjoy the sunshine, white sand and refreshing sea.Maybe you’d prefer to get your refreshment from a glass of wine? Adelaide Hills is (of course) only about 20 minutes’ drive from Adelaide. This is “the land of the long lunch” and with so much food and wine on offer, you’ll want to savour the flavours. Tour the wineries and breweries, the cafes and restaurants, and the art galleries and studios. And when you’re finished, visit the wildlife parks and gorges and the village of Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest German settlement.Adelaide hosts many annual festivals including The Adelaide Fringe Festival, the world music festival - WOMADelaide, the Royal Adelaide show and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. But you don’t have to wait for a festival to get festive. Adelaide has sophisticated bars with craft beer and tapas, historic pubs in some of the city’s oldest buildings, and a live music scene featuring young bands playing original songs every night of the week.Shopping and diningAustralia’s oldest pedestrian shopping street, Rundle Mall has 15 arcades and over 600 stores. With 19th century buildings, public art, buskers and events, it’s a very lively place to grab a bargain. Harbour Town near Adelaide Airport is number one in the city for outlet shopping, and King William Road is a great place to find boutiques and local fashion designers.Adelaide’s dining scene has everything from pub meals and chicken schnitzels to fine dining and restaurants owned by the likes of Jamie Oliver and other big-name chefs. There’s al fresco food and heaps of choice on Rundle Street, and Gouger Street is on hand if you want cuisine from across the world.Getting hereGetting here is as easy as bundling your Adelaide accommodation and flights up in one of our Adelaide holiday packages. Once you've arrived, you won't have any trouble getting around on public trains and buses, and the airport is only seven kms from the city.
