In 1865, that honour was transferred to Port Nicholson, now known as Wellington. Auckland is surrounded by eleven (thankfully) extinct volcanoes, which now form its uniquely shaped green hills.Things to doThe best way to get a good view of Auckland is from the Sky Tower, New Zealand’s tallest man-made structure. From three viewing platforms, you can see all the way to Rangitoto and beyond – up to 80 kms! If you’re feeling particularly brave, take the SkyJump and leap 192 metres straight down, suspended on a wire. For something a little less adrenaline-pumping, but no less exciting, take a trip to the Auckland Art Gallery. With four stories worth of exhibitions, and art spanning seven centuries, this is the largest permanent collection of Kiwi art in the country. Those who like aquatic attractions can also spot some interesting sights at SEA LIFE Aquarium and the New Zealand Maritime Museum.Auckland’s extinct volcanoes are sweet places for relaxing walks and great views. Mt. Eden has a green basin perfect for watching the sunset, and a 5.5 acre garden filled with colourful plants.Just a short ferry ride from Auckland city, Devonport is a charming village by the sea. Check out Mount Victoria Reserve for impressive views of Rangitoto.Speaking of Rangitoto, this 600-year-old volcano is a 25 minute ferry ride from Auckland’s coast… and well worth the trip. It’s only a one-hour walk to the summit and its spectacular views, and the trail winds through fields of black lava stones and native forest. Waiheke Island is the ideal place for a wine tour, with its many vineyards, and it has beautiful secluded beaches as well.Shopping and diningIt’s easy to find some sweet shopping in Auckland. The Britomart precinct has a terrific array of fashion. Devonport has book shops and quirky gifts. K Road (Karangahape Road) in Central Auckland has everything from boutiques to art galleries to nightlife.
