In summer, swimming nets are in place at Cairns’ Northern Beaches so you can enjoy the blue skies and refreshing water without being bothered by stingers. Want something a little more exciting than a swim? Take some kite boarding lessons at Yorkeys Knob. Spend some time in Cairns and spend some time checking out the activities there: the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, Cairns Tropical Zoo or the Kuranda Scenic Railway, which takes you from Cairns to Kuranda, a rainforest village with markets and art galleries, close to the steep and rugged Barron Falls waterfall.

While you’re here, make sure you scuba, snorkel or take a boat ride around the Great Barrier Reef, and hike the forests trails of the Daintree. These two attractions are Queensland icons you simply can’t miss.

Getting around

From Cairns Airport it’s only an 11-minute drive to Machans Beach, the closest of the Northern Beaches. You can hire a car in Cairns – especially useful if you intend to explore the vast Tropical North. Buses from Cairns run every half an hour to favourite beaches like Trinity Beach and Yorkeys Knob, and you can also get a taxi straight from the airport to your Northern Beaches hotel.
