Settle in at your Long Island City accommodation and hit the town. Fill up on contemporary art at MoMA PS1, which is affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art over in Manhattan. Parks are predominant here: Gantry Plaza State Park spans 12 acres of riverside lands and offers a fishing pier, luxurious gardens and views of the New York City skyline. Continue south into Hunter's Point South Park for additional views, or venture north to the Socrates Sculpture Park, a former landfill turned public art exhibition space. In the evening, how about a show at the Secret Theatre? (Don't worry, it's easier to find than it sounds.) Of course, the city lights await just across the East River.
Cruise in to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in Queens, and you'll find yourself a mere 10 km from Long Island City. You can rent a car if you like, but you'll find it easier to navigate the busy city streets without one. It's best to take a cab or hop on the Q70 bus to access the metro; take the E or 7 line to get to Long Island City. Once you reach your destination, make like a true New Yorker and get yourself around on your own two feet. If it's more than a few blocks, it's easy enough to hop on the metro or MTA bus system.
